The fees just went up

Whitman changed its plumbing and gas fees on September 22, 2026. The minimum plumbing permit, which covers the first fixture, is now $50. The minimum gas permit, which covers the first appliance, is also $50. A gas water heater needs both, which comes to $100 at the minimums. An electric one does not need the gas permit.

A re-inspection is $100. The town will not issue a permit unless copies of the plumber's licenses are attached to the application. A quote written before late September may still show the old fee.

The office

The Building Department is in Town Hall at 54 South Ave, 781-618-9700. It is open 8 to 4 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and 8 to 7:30 on Tuesday. Applications are filed online through PermitEyes.

Inspections are booked by calling the inspector directly. The town lists the plumbing and gas inspector's phone hour as 7 to 8 in the morning.

The housing

The median home in Whitman was built in 1957. About 18 percent of units are in two-, three- and four-family houses. Just over half the town heats with gas and close to a third with oil.

Water from Brockton

Whitman buys its water from Brockton, which draws it from Silver Lake. The report does not give a hardness figure.

Gas and rebates

National Grid supplies both gas and electricity. For a gas smell, leave and call 911, then National Grid at 800-233-5325. Mass Save's 2026 rebate on a heat pump water heater is $750.

Tenants

The Whitman Board of Health is also at 54 South Ave, 781-618-9754, Monday through Thursday.

Questions

Is this a plumbing company?

No. This is an independent referral site for Whitman. Calls go to a local licensed plumber. Ask for the license number on the call.

What should I do right now?

Turn off the cold water supply valve on top of the heater, then shut off the gas valve or the breaker. Put towels down and move anything valuable off the floor. Then call.

I'm a tenant. Whose problem is this?

The landlord's. Massachusetts requires landlords to supply hot water and to fix a failed heater promptly. Shut the valve, photograph the leak, and notify the landlord in writing today. If you need the number for a plumber because the landlord asked you to arrange it, that is what this line is for.

It's a condo. Who pays?

Usually the unit owner for the heater itself and any damage inside the unit; damage to units below or common areas goes through the association's master policy and your HO-6. Document everything before the plumber removes the old tank.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Massachusetts requires a plumbing permit (and a gas permit for gas units). A plumber who says you do not need one is a warning sign.

Do you charge for the call?

No. You pay the plumber directly for any work you agree to.
